PERSONALITY
One of the most notable aspects of Pidge is that she's extremely intelligent. She has a great head for technology and enjoys building it. Being out in space among alien races gives her the opportunity to tinker with things not available on Earth. There have been many instances where Pidge has built her own devices or where she’s modified others to suit her need. Capable of building things out of random junk found in a trash heap in the middle of nowhere. Her intellect has saved the team many times over and they often look to her when dealing with unknown objects knowing that eventually Pidge will be able to figure out what it is. Over the course of time, Pidge has used her intelligence to fiddle with technology that would allow them to infiltrate enemy bases using cloaking technology or making an algorithm for finding Galra ships. While this helps the team in their long-term mission, she simply does it because she can and enjoys it. Pidge is always proud to show off her newest project and never gives up simply because she failed a few times in trying to get it right.
Pidge sometimes has a hard time socializing with others due to her intellect. When in school, she corrects the teacher and is ridiculed for it. She was upset by the way they treated her and therefore she never connected with the students in her class. Even after joining the Galaxy Garrison, Pidge never reached out to her teammates in order to get closer to them. Preferring to spend her free time alone in order to find two people who understood better than anyone else. While she did stick with the other Paladins for a brief period of time, Pidge was ready to leave them a man down so she could find her brother and father. However, she gave up the search after the Castle had been invaded by the enemy and she was the only one who was currently capable of saving the others. It was then that she admitted to the team that she was actually a girl even though most of them knew. From then on, Pidge started to really bond and get closer to the rest of the team. However, she still tends to be a bit socially awkward around new people.
Despite not being able to form a solid bond with people right away, Pidge is a kind individual. When she sees someone in need, she won’t hesitate to put aside her own desires to help them out. She will go out of her way to help a complete stranger or put herself in the line of fire to save their life. There is absolutely no way that she could turn her back on someone in need even if that means putting her own problems on the back burner for a while. It’s no mistake that Pidge ended with the Lion that has the shield - someone who would protect everyone from danger when faced with it.
While Pidge is kind to everyone without even meeting them, she’s absolutely loyal to the people she has become close to. She would do everything that she would for a stranger and then some. These are the individuals who matter most to her in the world and Pidge would go to the farthest reaches of space just to get them back. Losing them isn’t something she can take easily and when they need her, Pidge will be there. For them, she would face entire fleets of Galra or opponents twice her size or search the entire galaxy to find them. When their lives are at risk (especially shown with her family), she tends to lose herself and can become reckless.
Despite being kind, Pidge can also get very angry at people. Her temper isn’t something that’s displayed very often except when someone has wronged her. After discovering that the Garrison was covering up the truth about her family, she was angry at Iverson for keeping it from her. Even when disguised as Pidge Gunderson, there were times when her temper made her lash out at her teacher. It wasn’t just one man’s choice to lie to her but this was the person Pidge focused her anger on. For the most part it’s difficult to make her genuinely angry and requires the most vicious sort of betrayal - usually involving her family. Otherwise that anger is a lot more subdued.
Usually Pidge is a more upbeat individual who can be easily excitable. There are several different types of excitement that she exhibits - the most frequent being cheerful. With a whole galaxy to explore, there’s a lot of new things for her to learn about. Pidge loves being able to see and tinker with alien technology. Sometimes she can forget herself in the face of something extraordinary and jumps into expressing her happiness at seeing some new tech - such as AI robots (or later on in canon when she shows Matt around the Castle without stopping to let him really enjoy it). Then there are times when she’s a sort of nervous excited when she starts to babble at random - not giving other people the opportunity to get a word in. Next there is uneasy excitement where she doesn’t quite know what to do with herself so she builds random stuff that is merely meant to put herself at ease again. This is how she ended up building versions of her friends out of junk and introduced them to the space caterpillars. Finally there is restless excitement where Pidge just can’t sit still waiting for something to happen. She has to be doing something with her time and not just be idle.
Luckily that last one is often quelled by her curious nature. She enjoys learning about all sorts of things even outside of technology. When given a break between battles, Pidge went from watching Hunk bake to wanting to learn the Altean language. While that may have been partly fueled by her desire to understand the ships technology better, she just genuinely wanted to learn. In space there are a lot of unknown objects and Pidge throws herself into finding out more about them. Even visiting new planets is a wondrous event for Pidge - though she would prefer a city to wilderness. Her curiosity knows no limits and she would follow it where ever it may lead her.
There is a playful side to her as well, one that doesn’t hesitate to jump in and joke around with the guys. Not even she can be all work and no play. Pidge is not afraid to be “one of the guys” despite not actually being a guy. She is a lot more playful with Lance and Hunk simply because she’s known them longer. When it comes to horsing around with the others, she often gives as good as she gets - making snappy or sassy comebacks. Through everything, Pidge is just a kid who enjoys hanging out with her friends and having a good time. They even sometimes have witty banter in the middle of battle and need to be told to focus. Yet she also can be serious when the need calls for it. Due to their life as Paladins of Voltron, there are many opportunities to be serious both inside of battle, planning or while on other sorts of missions. Trying to defend the galaxy is a huge responsibility and Pidge knows that they have to take that duty seriously. Lives are often at risk and it’s no time to be goofing around too much.
Determination plays a key part in her personality as it’s what drove her to enroll with the Garrison and led to becoming a Paladin. Pidge was so determined to find her family that she left Earth behind. For one stubborn moment, she turned away from saving the galaxy in order to save her family. Even when she should have been completely focusing on her missions, she would take the time to continue her search for any information. She was even willing to risk her own life as an object hurtled toward her in order to download more information and had to be physically pulled to safety. Once Pidge has set her mind to do something, nothing can make her give up on it permanently.
At times, Pidge can be bluntly honest with people to the point where it can be a little hurtful. While hurting people isn’t something she intended to do, it’s just an unfortunate side effect. She doesn’t always realize when she’s doing it to start with. On occasion, she can blurt out strange truths that no one even asked for. Yet despite her honest nature, Pidge is capable of lying and deceiving people. Somehow, she managed to fool an instructor at the Garrison about who she was even though he had known who she was. For a while, Pidge even fooled her team (especially Lance) about her gender until finally admitting to it. Though most of them already knew by the time she did so. Now that it’s out in the open, she doesn’t try to hide it anymore.
Above all, Pidge is adaptable. She fell into the role of being male well enough to fool several people for a period of time. Over the course of events, Pidge has shown just how adaptable she is - going from being a communications officer to a pilot of a Lion - using Earth technology to alien tech - even living in a giant spaceship castle and fighting a huge army while she’d been just an ordinary girl attending to. Some parts are easier for her to adapt to than others. Her eyes are looking towards the distant future without completely losing sight of the moment she’s in. Pidge allows herself to have her brief moments of doubt and sorrow before snapping back.
The relationship she has with her brother is very important part of Pidge's life. Matt has always been someone she looked up to in a lot of ways. They're an extremely close pair of siblings who don't have a lot of secrets between them but many shared interests. Pidge typically shares all of her problems with her brother and he encourages her to be better. When he told her that he got into Garrison, Pidge was so excited and happy for him. He was the one who gave her the nickname "Pidge" that she used as her name upon joining the Garrison and also the glasses that she wears despite not actually needing them. Without him, she wouldn’t be the Paladin of the Green Lion.
While Matt is her actual brother, Shiro is like a surrogate one to Pidge. Having been on the mission with her family, he is the one link to them she had to start with and she's upset when she finds out that he attacked her brother. However, Pidge hugs him after finding out that he'd done it to save Matt. Since Shiro is the leader of the team (for the most part), she has no problem going to him if there's a problem or if she has an idea. She was sad when he was gone and didn't want anyone to take his place but knew they would have to find someone to pilot the Black Lion in his absence.
Lance and Hunk were originally her teammates at the Garrison but they weren't all that close there. They were just three people who trained together and she tried to keep her distance. Now that they work closely together all of the time, she's grown closer. Pidge will enthusiastically rope Lance into helping her collect money for a game or hang out with Hunk either while he cooks or they tinker with tech. Then there's Keith who was once the lone emo wolf doing his own thing before becoming temporary leader. When he decided to step away from team Voltron, Pidge was in there with everyone else hugging him.
She respects both Allura and Coran, working well beside them even if she tends to spend more time with Coran when something on the ship goes wrong. Now that Allura has become the Paladin of the Blue Lion, they spend more time together in battles. These six people have become like part of her family and she cares about them all very much. Pidge would trust any one of them to watch her back in a tough situation.
